Tuovilanlahti Radio Village
One of the tasks of the media is to convey accurate information about the lives and conditions of different groups of people. This purpose was served by the Finnish Broadcasting Company’s programme series “The Village Lives”. In 1949–50, the first series was broadcast from Loppi. Around ten years later, a new village was sought for the series.
Tuovilanlahti was the most presentable for the Village Lives series
Tuovilanlahti in Maaninka is, both from the perspective of the past and the present, a very interesting village community. In the last century and even later, this area formed what was commonly referred to as a kind of “gateway to the northern parishes.” This was because Tuovilanlahti was the terminus of an important shipping route.
Viewed in a modern light, this locality forms an entity with its own distinctive character, both in terms of economic activity and in other areas of life. This is presumably the reason why, after careful consideration, the Finnish Broadcasting Company has chosen Tuovilanlahti as the village community in Finland that will be featured in a radio report to be broadcast within the coming month.
It was precisely in this context that the matter was presented yesterday to representatives of the Maaninka press by the head of the commentary department of the Finnish Broadcasting Company, journalist Leo Meller, and information officer Erkki Narikkainen. Also present were the well-known commentators Pekka Tiilikainen and Niilo Ihamäki.
The Opinion of the Municipal Leaders
In a matter such as this, it is important. For this reason, a consultation meeting with the municipal leaders had been arranged at the initial stage. Present were the vice-chairman of the municipal board, Veikko Parviainen, the municipal manager, Reino Heikkinen, the chairman of the municipal council, lay judge A. Mykkänen, health inspector Elsa Julkunen and constable Sulo Koskinen.
Within the framework of the negotiations, general guidelines were drawn up, on the basis of which the details of this documentary series will be adapted, the subjects to be filmed agreed upon, and the overall recording planned with a view to reflecting village life in its contemporary form, “and possibly other matters concerning the entire parish as well, of which there seemed to be no shortage.”
Is There Anything to Tell About Tuovilanlahti?
This central question was addressed at a consultation meeting held in the Tuovilanlahti Youth Association Hall, where lay judge A. Mykkänen noted, among other things, that the village has 13 factories and industrial plants, and that the number is still increasing with further industrial development. There are several financially sound and significant enterprises that have been formed into a coherent whole, and the total population of this entire village municipality is about 500 people. The population’s standard of living, the railway, and the extensive medium-sized farms indicate that this area will be able to hold its own in the future as well.
The Purpose of the Village Description
This matter was presented by the head of the commentary department, Leo Meller, who mentioned, among other things, that after long and thorough consideration, Tuovilanlahti was chosen as the subject of the “The Village Lives” documentary series. The series primarily provides a realistic portrayal of the locality’s present situation, its activities, and its people. The first episode of the series was broadcast in 1949, and since then the aim of the Finnish Broadcasting Company has been to give as truthful a picture as possible of life in each village.
